Shatner in space is proof of a very strange world

This is too good. Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner — age 90 — is going to space.

William Shatner is boldly going where Jeff Bezos has gone before. On Monday, Bezos’s commercial spaceflight venture Blue Origin announced that the “Star Trek” actor will fly to space on board the company’s New Shepard spacecraft on Oct. 12. Joining him will be Audrey Powers, the company’s vice president of mission and flight operations, along with crewmates Chris Boshuizen and Glen de Vries. At 90 years old, Shatner will be the oldest person to fly to space. “I’ve heard about space for a long time now,” Shatner said in a news release. “I’m taking the opportunity to see it for myself. What a miracle.”

I’ve always loved Shatner, even as I recognize why there are people — including former Star Trek castmates — who can’t stand him. But his ego is, to me, part of his charm. He’s very funny, too. I enjoy following him on Twitter, where he’s not above getting into fights with other tweeters.

On this occasion, Shatner tweeted, “So now I can say something. Yes, it’s true; I’m going to be a ‘rocket man!’” If you don’t know the reference, check out the video above.

Shatner in space is proof that if you can just hang around long enough — that goes for Shatner and all of us here to witness it — this crazy world just keeps getting crazier.

Dems kidding themselves about why they won in 2020

Let’s be clear: Joe Biden’s election as president was not a mandate to spend trillions of dollars and carry out the democratic socialist agenda of Bernie Sanders. The 2020 election was a referendum on Donald Trump. That’s it.

The $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill is fairly popular with Americans, and the country’s roads, airports and bridges are in dire need of attention. But the $3.5 trillion “Build Back Better” Christmas tree is not why Americans sent Biden or any other Democrats to Washington.

And yet, as Democrats struggle to come up with votes to pass the latest multi-trillion dollar package to come out of Washington in the last couple of years, Democrats from Sanders to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Nancy Pelosi to President Biden keep claiming that passing this package is what they were elected to do.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says the $3.5 trillion bill “is big, bold change — the kind of change America thirsts for.”

Wrong.

Sanders and other Democratic senators including Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand, Mazie Hirono, Elizabeth Warren and others issued a statement a couple of weeks ago to Pelosi urging her to take up the ginormous social spending bill before the infrastructure bill because “that is what we agreed to, it’s what the American people want, and it’s the only path forward for this Congress.”

Wrong.

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe said, “Voters didn’t send Democrats to Washington to sit around and chitty-chat all day. They need to get this done.”

Wrong.

Democrats hold the slimmest of majorities in Congress, and Biden holds the White House, not because they promised to spend, spend, spend. They’re there because the election was a referendum on Trump, and Trump lost — narrowly. Biden won 25 states (and D.C.), and Trump won 25 states. But Biden won the electoral college, and that’s what matters.

Democrats claim that if they don’t pass trillions more in liberal wish list items they might lose the midterms in 2022, or even the White House in 2024. Actually, they endanger themselves more by passing those things than by not.
