Just watched you on PBS. Why didn't you mention that a majority of people being brutally handled by ICE are in the US legally? It's pretty funny how you shove aside all the people who are innocent, yet ICE illegally detained. “Well of course there are going to be mistakes”. How come you didn't mention the Constitutional rights that ICE ignoring, like the fiesta Amendment? It was pretty childish of you to say that your colleague was not a reporter, but an activist. If he is an activist, then so are you. Very unprofessional, an embarrassment.

I got this, he is a liar

Take off your politically biased blinders. Your comprehension of the current political environment, and the actions perpetrated on citizens by ice is grossly inaccurate. I hope you do a little soul searching, however, I’m sure you’re a lost cause.

Edward Low's avatar

those facts you just provided shows you support a pedophile.. not sure if you wanted to do that

Gary Abernathy’s views as contributed on the @pbsnewshour tonight illustrates the reasoning of all the people who stood by & let Hitler disappear Jews.

Are you sleeping w Stephen Miller???!!! Just tonite on the News Hour, YOU really said that it’s ok to murder people for protesting because you NEVER admitted that ICE went too far! You are a DISGRACE.. smiling the entire time while speaking on the NewsHour!

You are way too smug!!!

You are a disgusting liar, Mr. Abernathy!🤬

Edward Low's avatar

the best thing you can say about these likes of Gary Abernathy

he is using the lies of an administration as if they are facts

Tracy Wright's avatar

That smirk on your face during the PBS News Hour tonight really sickened me!🤮

Edward Low's avatar

isn't it amazing how arrogant evil can be... how dressing in lies makes them feel they are wearing armor.

I am sure he and stephen miller could sit down and have a long session of racism.

The media and the public are the "judge and jury" before an investigation is conducted? How about President Trump, Secretary Noem, and Stephen Miller? They comment within minutes of the shootings and call those killed "domestic terrorists" and would be assassins. Why can't they wait for an investigation or at least time to watch a video of the shooting?

Gary Abernathy's avatar

Thank you David. Perhaps you missed this line: “ The opinions of average citizens, attention-seeking governors and mayors and even a president of what happened in the cases of both high-profile deadly shootings in Minneapolis based on media reports, eye witness accounts and even cell phone video are meaningless and, too often, inflammatory.”

Wry Banter's avatar

I heard that loud and clear, while you were smirking at the absurdity of it. You got a lot of laughs from PBS viewers tonight. I assume that was your goal.

Dane Galloway's avatar

You're a fucking moron.

Maneki Neko's avatar

Lock him up, Gary?

Edward Low's avatar

How proud you must be

you can double down on dishonest and not feel a bit of moral destruction

I think the bulk of column is critical of the media and public, isn’t it? One part of one sentence doesn’t really compare with the many words critical of the media. I’d also suggest that President Trump should be held to a far higher standard than the public, he is the leader of the free world and the United States. He should be the first one to say lets wait for an investigation and instead he seems to be the first or almost the first to jump to conclusions.

In terms of other commenters calling you names, trolling you, and behaving terribly, it;s horrible. Just stick to the issues.

Healthy Wellness's avatar

The name-calling finally gets him some engagement - and more fodder. Which is why he seemingly provokes it, justifying the unjustifiable - insufferably playing the 'reasonable' part.

Healthy Wellness's avatar

The president's words are not meaningless. Nor are those of his entire gaslighting administration, you disingenuous apologist.

MCPoppins1's avatar

The Trump Administration enforcers are not banging down doors, kidnapping people without a warrant, identity or due process, murdering citizens in the streets, because they care about catching dangerous criminals. ICE and CBP are hiring criminals. Trump set free convicts who assaulted law enforcement on Jan 6 and had pled guilty. What they are doing with their tactics, is just practice for how they plan to destroy the rule of law in this country so they can retain power and prevent fair elections. Through intimidation and violating peoples civil rights. By sowing fear, arresting journalists they are following Putin’s playbook. Murdering people in cold blood is already happening. You conveniently ignore facts, and quote unsubstantiated lies. You and your fellow gaslighters are complicit in the tragic deterioration of our society and fast approaching collapse of our economy. Our Tourism industry is a disaster for instance. Nobody wants to come here and show support for our Chaos President. We are being boycotted. But I don’t hear about that on CNBC. Those talking heads seem to be gagged. PBS should not give your propaganda a platform, you belong on CBS or Fox, but I guess its best to be warned that what is coming will be even worse unless the people stand up a d resist. Which they are, legally. A million or more citizen observers and journalists. Because otherwise, who will tell the truth about what is happening? Obviously not the leaders of ICE and DHS. Or apologists like you. You are so on the wrong side of history.

Edward Low's avatar

I guess when stephen miller said: go to Home Depot and just start arresting people, Gary Abernathy took it as marching orders to double down on his racism and hate.

Dossie Gorman's avatar

Gary, I watched you on PBS Newshour tonight, and could not believe my ears. You sounded smug, self-righteous and completely unconcerned about the inhumane treatment and killings, by government thugs, of citizens voicing their rights. Have you no moral compass at all?

Maneki Neko's avatar

Thank you for reminding me how much I absolutely love Jonathan Capehart.

JS's avatar

I came here just to say that I was disgusted by your apologies for ICE on the PBS newshour. You should be ashamed, defending the murder of innocent civilians and abductions of citizens by masked thugs. Shame on you.

Michael Kemper's avatar

Gary, I just watched you justify the murders of two American citizens because Minneapolis is a “sanctuary city.” You are a true Nazi. Not just a fascist, a through and through Nazi. You bring shame to humans everywhere.

Louis Freedberg's avatar

By the way, never thought I would hear a “journalist” describe Donal Trump as “ the voice of reason” —

Edward Low's avatar

AND

you never should

Katherine Finn's avatar

I’d like to copy / paste and re-stack pretty much every comment here.

I will also be contacting PBS to convey that I don’t want to listen to a full on nazi pretending to be a journalist. PS you have 301 subscribers - ha ha ha, what a surprise!!!

Mary Hogan's avatar

He was disgusting on PBS. I don't know how Jonathan kept his cool.

Edward Low's avatar

you could see how Mr.Capehart was seething.. how he thought that maybe there were people smart enough not to expose 'alternate facts' (i.e. lies)

Gary Abernathy's avatar

Great! That’s up about 50 from yesterday!

Marisa Rich's avatar

I don’t think you understand why your subscriber numbers are up by 50. Those of us posting here saw your appearance on PBS Newshour today and found it lacking in a basic understanding of ICE and Border Control actions against everyone NOT just criminals who are in the US illegally.

You come across as arrogant and contemptuous of those

who disagree with you. If you believe that these agencies deserve the respect of US citizens; then the onus of responsibility must begin with the Executive Branch, ICE,CBP, FBI and the Justice Department. Not the other way around.

Katherine Finn's avatar

Shame. You are on the wrong side of history. Where’s your integrity? Where’s your morality?

Maneki Neko's avatar

We have a game we play called “spot the Gary”, when we are out and about in the world.

It is usually a “Masshole”.

I’m glad so many are joining in. Fifty, in fact.

Edward Low's avatar

Not everyone liked Hitler.. but today some still look up to him

If he had a substack today... Gary Abernathy would read it... and be proud to be a paying member.

And in a country of 300+ million hateanathy would be proud to be a member of the 300 hitler youth

Leave it to Gary Abernathy . . .

. . . to make PBS regret doing its best to be truly fair and balanced.  For his part, he did HIS best to come off as a human being, by saying tonight how happy he was to be a guest commentator again on the NewsHour.  Well, I haven't missed this jerk.

Leave it to him, with that smug little grin of his, to blithely equate all of the Minneapolis protestors and observers with the ramped-up rioters and cop-beaters that I call the January Sicks.  My God.  And to dismiss all of them, and their right to create and preserve evidence, and serve as witnesses, on the basis of a small fraction "tearing down barricades" and doing other things that we can all agree are not peaceful.  I see Abernathy’s piece with this title in his substack: "The public and the media too often try to be judge and jury based on cell video, partial information".  You go on to say, "Here’s a good rule of thumb for the public and the media: We should not appoint ourselves judge and jury on events that play out in public, no matter how much “evidence” we think we have."  Thanks, Professor Condescension.  I presume that you're just fine with our tag-team Goebbels wannabes, Noem and Leavitt, immediately leaping to defamatory conclusions that the Good and Pretti cases were open-and-shut cases of domestic terrorism, attempted assassinations, insurrection, etc.  No, of course.  Videos, no matter now numerous, are never the last word in any matter, nor should they be.  But when it comes to the conclusions that the public overwhelmingly drew from the ample documentation: The Truth, as compared to the Administration's propaganda = Neil deGrasse Tyson, as compared to Mark Sargent.

Without in-person witnesses and their videos, Trump's Ministry of Truth would march on, unchallenged.  So, Gary, please allow me to knock down this particular straw man of yours:   No responsible person, from among the thousands of angry and traumatized men and women of Minneapolis, from all walks of life, of all ages all ethnicities, has indicated a desire to serve, or suggested that they are qualified to serve, as "judge and jury" in the Good or Pretti matters, on the basis of any videos.  What they, and I, and millions of sane, patriotic Americans want and expect, is not only that all available evidence be considered in genuine investigations of those killings, but that there actually BE genuine investigations. And that the matters REACH an actual judge and jury, as they ought to.

ICE must be left alone to "do their job"?  Really, Gary?   One of your equals in IQ and intellectual integrity, Ron Johnson, has just referred, on NPR, to a "lot" of criminals rounded up by ICE (for which he, like you, believes we all owe ICE and Trump our gratitude).  Most immigration violations are civil, not criminal in nature.  You did know that, didn't you, Mr. Abernathy?  Or perhaps not.  And reliable reporting, from several sources, reveals that a tiny fraction of the thousands arrested by Trump's ICE have even been charged with any crimes other than traffic tickets, with an even smaller percentage CONVICTED of a crime.  And a large proportion -- an outrageous, unacceptably large proportion -- of people being rounded up have been racially profiled, were here with a legal right to reside and work, and/or were in the process of dutifully following the necessary process of becoming legal.  There comes a point -- and we are WELL past it -- when reports of violence toward those who bear no resemblance to the criminal population Mr. Trump purportedly intended to target can no longer be dismissed as merely "anecdotal".   I presume that you are familiar with the sanctity of the presumption of innocence, Mr. Abernathy.  Or maybe not.  "Worst of the worst"?  That describes the thugs that Noem has hired, from the ranks of the January Sicks rioters and cop-beaters, and fans of Ultimate Fighting and Mixed Martial Arts, all of them enticed with a huge bonus and recruitment songs and slogans barely distinguishable from those of the Third Reich.

Their "training" now takes 1/3 as long as training done previously. . . and these people, just like our active duty military, were not trained to be, and were never meant to be, an urban police force. To these guys -- who confront a woman at her front door with rifles at the ready, in full, terrifying military garb (as if they were about to storm Bin Laden's compound) -- yes, to these guys, concepts like "rules of engagement", "proportionality" and "de-escalation" must be as foreign as our Constitution is to you, Mr. Abernathy.

Mr. Trump once said one thing, and one thing only, that I agree with:  that we shouldn't welcome those who don't share our values.  Accordingly, Mr. Abernathy, I suggest that you not let the proverbial screen door hit you in the ass when you depart for your new home in Moscow.

Gary you are not helpful!

Louis Freedberg's avatar

As a reporter —check out my Substack Education on the Liine —could you advise where on the DHS site there are names of the thousand of rapists, murderers, and child molesters the trump administration has rounded up

And that you referenced on the Newshour? I have been looking for them, but haven’t found them so we’d appreciate you pointing me to where those names are. Much appreciated.

Edward Low's avatar

Wait.. of all the lies.. this too was a lie by Gary Abernathy

#surprisedNOTsurprised

Wry Banter's avatar

On PBS Newshour tonight, when you were describing the actions of Minneapolis protesters it sounded more like your were describing the actions of the J6 insurrectionists. I suppose in your imagination you think J6 was a peaceful demonstration. Your detachment from reality is breathtaking.

Dale Neal: Mountains & Rivers's avatar

I was disgusted on PBS by your smug defense of street thugs shooting Good and Pretti and blaming the victims for provoking the ICE agents. I don’t see how you call yourself a journalist if all you do is parrot Trump’s propaganda. Ron Johnson said much the same convenient lines on PBS.
