I should add that I sent the same comment to the PBS News Hour about hoping never ever to hear/see Mr Abernathy again and I am certain my comment was not the only one.
I’m certain too. 😊 Many people don’t want to hear things that do not reflect what they already think. They just want to tune in and have their opinions reinforced because they are sure the facts are on their side. It’s very possible they will listen to you and keep things along a very narrow POV. Good luck!
Yes, many on the right who are maga supporters (and call true conservatives rhinos) don’t want to hear that past US presidents deported more illegally crossing immigrants who committed crimes without putting masked heavily armed thuggish federal agents in communities to assault, kill US citizens, and immigrants who are following existing immigration laws. We see it on video. Rhetorical question: Why are Trump supporters ok with US unconstitutional acts and US law violations of this administration?
You best check laws. Ignorance is rampant among magas. ICE has been accused of violating immigration laws in Minneapolis through aggressive enforcement tactics, including unlawful arrests, detentions of immigrants and refugees without proper cause and violating asylum statutes. These actions have led to numerous court challenges and findings of constitutional violations related to individual rights and due process. Over 100 court orders have been violated by DOJ and/or DHS.
How many Mateo Garcias are there in the country legally and illegally? ICE has more than enough work to do just targeting illegal aliens who have committed serious crimes. They don’t deliberately target people with legal status.
ICE has detained numerous US citizens, over whom it has no jurisdiction, on top of non-citizens who are here lawfully. It's even detained four members of the Oglala Sioux tribe, and only released one. It's been entering private residences with a battering ram, without a warrant. It's running a "Papers, Please!" operation on the streets. That's not part of Traditional America, if that tradition includes the Fourth Amendment in the Bill of Rights.
Just from your drawing—and, even more so the MAGA Realist posters of the Administration—it looks as if your "Traditional America" is supposed to be mostly White and rural. Like, the Confederacy.
No, "Traditional America" is supposed to be mostly citizens along with immigrants who are here legally, that's all. Just follow the laws. Check out the ICE report from CNN from 2016 that I linked to. They detained the wrong guy for a while, mistaking him for his brother. They figured it out and got the right guy. CNN didn't rip them apart for it. Happens all the time. You get "detained" every time you're pulled over for a traffic stop, even if you get off with a warning. Sometimes innocent people being detained is a step on the way to finding the right person. I notice you make no mention at all of the hardcore criminals that ICE has gotten off the streets. That part of our rights too -- law enforcement officials keeping communities safe.
At least one of those hardcore criminals appears to have been in prison at the time ICE took him. Not a big win. I didn’t Google all of them; I don’t know how many were on the streets. Most people support deportation of actual felons, even on the Left. I certainly do. But there just aren’t enough illegal aliens in the entire USA prison system to meet the quotas that ICE is set.
The Minnesota operation—and why Minnesota, if not special animus towards the Somalis?—seems to be hoovering up an extraordinary number of legal residents, detaining them, sometimes violently, denying them access to counsel. Sure, every system is going to have occasional errors. But in Minneapolis, this appears to be a feature, not a bug. You can’t be detained for an alleged traffic violation without probable cause. What probable cause is ICE inventing? Driving while Brown/Black? They have even pulled over off-duty Minnesota police officers (who were not White). Where are their warrants to enter private homes? This really is a question of whether you believe in our Fourth Amendment, or are willing to forgo it for general dragnets (one of the complaints the Declaration of Independence makes against George III).
I can’t paste pictures into comment replies. DHS itself has a poster showing a bucolic beach with a 1960s muscle car and the tagline "America after 100 million deportations". Not even the most fanatical believe there are 100 million illegal aliens here. To get even close to 100 million, you have to deport all aliens, legal or otherwise, plus people stripped of their citizenship under Trump’s (probably invalid) revocation of birthright citizenship. I don't have to tell you, that makes America a lot more Caucasian. They are using the chorus from a neo-Nazi anthem in a recruitment poster. That’s DHS’s vision of Traditional America. I realize yours may differ, but then you should not make common cause with them.
Perhaps those who are impeding federal law enforcement's ability to apprehend and deport people living here illegally -- including violent criminals -- should be the ones to consider who they're making common cause with.
I am making common cause with the Constitution—the highest law of the land—especially the Fourth Amendment. I mean, you didn't even *try* to explain how ICE's dragnets comport with warrant and probable cause requirements. (They don't. The Hmong man, a US citizen, whom they took away in his bathrobe had his door battered in. No warrant. Their claim they were looking for a sex offender is simply a lie, and even if it were true, they have no authority to arrest a citizen or bang down his door.)
Ignoring the Constitution and instead allowing them to stop passersby or enter houses at whim may catch some violent criminals. Not many, though. I found the data: of the 13 "worst of the worst" list ICE released: 9 were taken by ICE, with paperwork, *directly from prison*. Nor did you even try to justify the remarkable number of US Citizens detained, a number we can't specify exactly since ICE fails to track it.
I conclude this doesn't trouble you so long as the burden falls on Black and Brown people, and on protesting White liberals.
4%, Gary. 4% have criminal records. That leaves 96% who are hardworking family members, just trying to survive and go through the legal process to become full citizens. But they get nabbed at their hearings and taking out their trash.
And I doubt your fear level being simply pulled over by a person in a position of authority is the same as for a woman or a minority. Even a white woman.
The only thing we have in common is the eradication of the aborigines/original inhabitants. You are a penal colony for what was deemed the dysfunctional of white, bourgeois society.
America was around 90% white country even as late as the 70s. Societies like USA & Australia are the only ones who have ever historically opened themselves up to large scale immigration to people of different ethnicities & cultures.
It only took about 50y for those who took their chance at a better life to turn gratitude into grievance. I don't even blame the immigrants themselves since their aspirations are natural & understandable. I do blame is the self-hating cult of elite bourgeois leftists doing everything to disestablish their own nations.
I am not American but even I can see that MAGA is just the latest historical incarnation of populist nativism that has existed as long as the USA has. The immediately preceding movement was the Tea Party, historically there were the Know-Nothings, those guys from Gangs of NY and a whole bunch of groups I don't immediately recall.
This may be an intrinsic political dynamic inside of settler/colonial societies where the previously-established group bears grievances toward recently-arrived rivals for economic wealth and political power.
No, actually, MAGA is trying to make America great again. It's really nothing more than that. Purple/pink hair, gender fluidity, free social benefits for illegal aliens, obstruction of justice, and "socialism" will not do it.
Dear Mr. Abernathy. I recently watched you make your case for the legitimacy of the DHS operation in Minneapolis on the PBS Newshour. I found your rationale to be flawed in a number of respects. Based on other reporting I’ve read by journalists on the ground in Minneapolis and interviews with Minnesotan public safety officials who have a firsthand perspective of what’s occurring in the trenches, your assertions that they are not cooperating with DHS is blatantly false and misleading. The senior officials from the police and corrections departments not only voice reasoned concerns about how ICE is both conducting and misrepresenting their actions, but they also provide factual policy and public safety mandates that they are following and how ICE is actively ignoring those laws and policies at best violating citizens’ and immigrants’ rights and at worst putting them in harms way. Their objective assessments stand in stark contrast to the inflammatory and false communications coming from DHS.
In addition, your minimization of the more egregious acts on the part of ICE where individuals have been arrested, violently manhandled, and even killed coupled with your assertion that this isn’t endemic flies in the face of statistics and the realities on the ground. Your stated perspective ignores the larger context and is disingenuous at best and exploitive and dangerous at worst.
Finally, it’s amazing to me, that you had the gall to claim that Don Lemon, who actually WAS in Minneapolis to shine a light on what is occurring in there and repeatedly stated that he was there to record the events, not participate in them - and there is no reasonable proof that he did participate as DHS has asserted - is not a journalist. I would assert that through your misrepresentation and omission of facts to make your points disqualifies you as a bona fide journalist. I have made it a point to be open to others’ points of view and applaud those who rely on facts to present a well-reasoned rationale and perspective that may be different from mine. At times I have rethought my opinions and perspective because of their arguments. You are most certainly not one of those individuals. Shame on you for abdicating your duty as a journalist - which most certainly you are not - by misrepresenting objective facts to make a point and exploit the worst instincts in your audience and put our very democracy at risk.
You are a person with zero ability for critical thought. Critical thinking requires that you be willing to accept that your ideas might be wrong. There is no evidence you’re capable of that. That makes you a hack. Nothing more.
Any defense of the tactics being used by ICE for the enforcement of _any_ law by _any_ entity in the United States of America is an endorsement of authoritarianism, and a failure to grok even the rudiments of the term ‘liberty and justice for all’. You are a shameful stain on the conservative movement, Gary Abernathy.
Just introduced to you on PBS Newshour debating Capehart. You seriously want us to follow orders from a man who accepts cash bribes in a FBI sting (Tom Homan) or cosplaying Natzis shooting us in the streets and then lying about who and what we are? You want us to back down from the corrupt pedophile telling us how to behave? I don’t think so.
1. Protecting illegal immigrants: Some People detained have legal asylum cases in the works. Whether you think their applications were made too easy or not, they did things legally. You can’t just take that away and detain and deport them without somehow ending their legal path, give them a denial of asylum or something more respectful.
2. Safety? Apparently MN transfers people in state corrections to ICE after they serve their sentence or possibly after conviction. If they are arrested and not convicted of anything, they are probably not handed over to ICE. Separation of local from federal law enforcement happens so that people of illegal status don’t fear talking to police. According to local news outlets, most of the worst that DHS is claiming to have gotten were already in the state prison system.
3. Safety again? ICE has allegedly caused vehicle crashes, pulled people from the vehicle and taken them away, leaving the vehicle on the road as a hazard. Not the standard of safe policing.
4. Th were 4th amendment. DHS just decided they could sign their own warrants without judicial signature off? How are they empowered to do that? They don’t even tell anyone that they did that, it has to be leaked.
Hi Mr. Abernathy. I used to read your opinion pieces in the Washington Post. While I do not share your political beliefs, I respected your civil tone and reasoning. I'm not sure what happened, but it appears that you've defaulted to name-calling and abandoned reasoned arguments for your positions.
I have the same positions I have always had, including criticism of President Trump when warranted. But the Trump hatred has driven his most vicious opponents to engage in behavior that must be called out for what it is. The impediment of law enforcement and the defense of illegal immigration is dangerous and must be called out. There is no pretending that there is anything reasonable about it. Thank you for reading and commenting.
I don't doubt that your positions haven't changed. I think that your use of pejorative terms like Lunatic Left has increased since your retirement from journalism. Name calling may appeal to a segment of your audience, but it also repels those who might otherwise consider your viewpoint. That seems counter-productive.
I want people to understand that there are some actions that don’t deserve to be referred to respectfully. These protests impeding law enforcement attempting to enforce laws passed by Congress are one of them. The media siding with them is a sad state of affairs. They represent lunacy and they deserve to be called out. I try to refer respectfully most of the time to people who disagree with me. In this case, for this apparently unhinged and dangerous faction, it’s not appropriate to do so.
Are you offended when people to the right of center are constantly labelled "extremist," Fascist and Nazis ... just because they believe in law and order, and the enforcement of existing American immigration law?
I personally don't like labels coming from any side of an argument. And, the use of nasty names to refer to people with whom you disagree politically only ensures that the divisions in our society remain. They serve no positive purpose.
Your occasional criticisms have been limited to SOME of his most floridly unhinged invective, while you actually use most of this administration's hyperbolic and reality and morality inverting rhetoric.
Otherwise, you're 97% trump-splainer, repeating all of their talking points, even after the kernels of truth many are based on have been exposed as untrue. Your "reasonable conservative" charade is apparent to all but your handful of fellow "centrist" magaholics.
It's a propaganda war and the Left owns 90% of the media. As of 2023, approximately 38.3% of American adults aged 25 and older have attained a college degree, which includes associate degrees and higher. Figure one third of them are Leftists.
The major media piece that they don't own (but are working on it!) is the church. About 30% of Americans attend church weekly or nearly every week, while around 40% attend at least once a month. However, some studies suggest that actual attendance may be lower than reported due to self-reporting biases.
How many is enough to tip it? Jesus had 12. No weapons, no media, just propaganda. "Propaganda: The systematic propagation of a doctrine or cause or of information reflecting the views and interests of those advocating such a doctrine or cause."
Don't discount the effectiveness of a committed few. Lord, make it so!
Yep. Thanks!
I hope never ever to hear or see you, an apologist for a demented fascist, on PBS News Hour.

You live in a bubble of whiteness and maleness.
If his bubble excludes you, he's one lucky white man.
He would be a lonely man, like you.
Not at all lonely but thank you for dropping in.
You dropped in on me, bruh. Back away from the hot stove.

You are the product. Your grievance is noted.

No, actually, MAGA is trying to make America great again. It's really nothing more than that. Purple/pink hair, gender fluidity, free social benefits for illegal aliens, obstruction of justice, and "socialism" will not do it.
Typical ignorant MAGA. Useless. MAGA is fascism.
You clearly need to do some reading on what fascism is and what it isn't.
The correspondence between MAGA and what Mussolini describes in "The Doctrine of Fascism" is striking.
